What is the P1022 purpose code?

Purpose code P1022 is the residual code within the technical family, covering technical services that the named technical codes do not describe, with scientific and space services given as examples. It is residual about the kind of technical work rather than about services generally, so the money still has to be for technical work of some sort. Two things to note before using it: the phrase other technical services also appears inside the architectural and engineering code, and space services are also named in the satellite services code in another group. Both overlaps are worth checking with your bank. Under RBI FEMA guidelines, this inward payment is classified under Other Business Services and reported accordingly.

When to use P1022 purpose code?

Use P1022 when an overseas client pays you for technical, scientific or space work that none of the named technical codes covers. Work through those first: architectural and engineering services, engineering services, research and development, and the agricultural and mining codes. Only where none describes your work does the receipt belong here. Where your work is scientific or space services, confirm with your bank whether it sits here or under the satellite services code, since both name space services.

When to use a different code:

  • Use P1009 or P1014 when the work is architectural or engineering services
  • Use P1008 when the work is research and development rather than an applied technical service
  • Use the matching S-code when you are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving money

Who typically uses P1022 purpose code

Indian businesses providing technical, scientific or space services to overseas clients where the work does not fit a named technical code. Because the code is defined by exclusion, there is no typical user, and it will usually be reached after the named codes have been checked and ruled out.

Examples of transactions covered under P1022 purpose code

  • Fees received from an overseas client for scientific services carried out in India
  • Payment for space services provided to a foreign organisation
  • A technical service that none of the named technical codes describes
  • A receipt your bank has confirmed belongs under other technical services

When NOT to use P1022 purpose code

  • The work is architectural or engineering services (use P1009 or P1014)
  • The work is research and development rather than an applied technical service (use P1008)
  • The work is not technical at all, in which case the residual code P1099 covers other services not included elsewhere
  • You are paying a foreign vendor rather than receiving (use the matching S-code)

Documents required for P1022 purpose code

To receive a payment under P1022, keep the following documents ready so your bank or platform can verify the transaction and report it correctly under FEMA.

DocumentPurpose
Commercial invoice - Describes the technical, scientific or space work provided and the amount billed to the overseas clientContract or Statement of Work - Establishes the nature of the work, which matters more here than on a named code
Purpose declaration form - The inward remittance form where the purpose of funds is formally statedKYC documents (if requested) - Used to verify your business during onboarding or compliance checks

How is a P1022 Purpose Code declared?

Declaring the code is pretty straightforward. Here's how the payment gets tagged and reported.

  1. Check the named codes first: Work through the architectural, engineering, research and other technical codes and confirm none describes your work.
  2. Raise your invoice: Bill the overseas client for the technical work, describing the service clearly since the code itself explains little.
  3. Declare the purpose: State the purpose of the inward remittance, on your bank's form or through your platform.
  4. Submit supporting documents: Provide the invoice and contract so the bank can verify the transaction and confirm the residual code is right.
  5. Get your FIRA: Once processed, your FIRA is issued as proof and the payment is reported under FEMA.
  6. With a traditional bank you handle each step of your payment journey. But with a platform built for cross-border payments, you can preselect a default purpose code so that the payments land smooth.

Common mistakes to avoid while using P1022 purpose code

A few common slips can hold up your payment or cause compliance issues. Here's what to watch for.

  1. Reaching for it before checking the named codes: Using P1022 because the work is technical, when engineering, architectural, research and mining services all have their own codes and this one covers what is left.
  2. Treating it as a general catch-all: Applying P1022 to non-technical services, when it is residual only within the technical family and P1099 is the general residual.
  3. Code and invoice mismatch: The code not matching what your contract describes, which flags the payment and matters more here since the code explains little on its own.
  4. Incomplete documents: Missing the contract or invoice, so the bank cannot establish what the work was and holds funds until provided.
  5. Missing PAN or KYC: Incomplete verification stops the bank from releasing the payment.
  6. Using an inward code for an outward payment: Applying a receipt code to money you're sending out instead of the matching outward code.
